The normative postulate problem: Hidden values in ecology, evolution, and conservation

چکیده
The translation of scientific data, analyses, and conclusions into public policy social action almost always contains an implication the investigator's ethics values. Direct statements these values are often deeply considered, but ethical implications structural constraints upstream analytical choices hidden. This is relatively uncontroversial from a philosophical point view, well-known to scholars in environmental ethics. However, many practitioners ecology evolution without such training (ourselves included) may not have realized that by asserting value biodiversity conservation either general or specific terms, they stating “normative postulate:” judgment taken be true foundational further thinking. These assumptions based on some theory reasoning, one has been made fully explicit. Consequently, theories metrics empirical research founded hidden normative postulates which unaware. We consider five cases where this case: local vs. global diversity, prioritization evolutionary distinctness, species concepts, extinction hybridization, non-native species. Conflicts over interpretation data driven different parties holding conceptions philosophy possible, with little guidance how can best adjudicated. To extent true, there exists postulate problem” for researchers.

Einstein ’ s Hidden Postulate
The present Note calls attention to an undeclared assumption in Einstein’s derivation of the Lorentz transformation (LT). In subsequent discussions of the special theory of relativity (SR), the practice has been to claim that the relativity principle and the postulate of the constancy of light in free space are the only two assumptions required for a unique specification of the desired kinemati...

متن کاملThe Adaptation Problem , Evolution and Normative Economics
Amartya Sen has advanced a number of distinct arguments against utilitarianism and ‘utility’-based views more generally. One of these invokes various ways in which underdogs can ‘adapt’ and learn to live with their situations. Sen’s argument is related to Jon Elster’s discussion of ‘adaptive preferences’ but is distinct in part because Sen cites the need for underdogs to survive. When read in c...
متن کاملDNA barcodes for ecology, evolution, and conservation.
The use of DNA barcodes, which are short gene sequences taken from a standardized portion of the genome and used to identify species, is entering a new phase of application as more and more investigations employ these genetic markers to address questions relating to the ecology and evolution of natural systems. The suite of DNA barcode markers now applied to specific taxonomic groups of organis...
